Guangdong Garment Industry: When Exports No Longer Become Proud

Winning or losing does not matter. When foreign trade exports are no longer the pride of Guangdong's garment industry, Guangdong clothing people are still exploring a foreign trade path with Guangdong characteristics. Utilizing the advantages of the industrial chain accumulated over the years, we innovated the trade model and allowed the foreign trade of Guangdong garments to upgrade during the adjustment.

Can you briefly talk about the general situation of textile and apparel exports in Guangdong and the status of foreign trade and exports in the entire Guangdong textile and apparel industry?

Liu Yueping: Guangdong has always been a major exporter of garments. Garment exports account for half of the clothing industry. However, with the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008, some export companies started to pay attention to the domestic market, and gradually adjusted the ratio of exports to domestic sales. The proportion of the apparel industry has decreased year by year.

In the past ten years since China joined the WTO, with the global economic integration, what challenges and opportunities have been brought to Guangdong's textile and clothing industry?

Liu Yueping: First of all, the gradual cancellation of quotas has brought a broad market space for Guangdong garment products to enter the international market. Guangdong's garment export volume has increased from 9.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2000 to 33.922 billion U.S. dollars in 2007. More times. At the same time, due to excessive dependence on exports, the global market tightening caused by a financial crisis directly hit the garment industry in Guangdong. In 2008, Guangdong's clothing exports fell to 25.354 billion US dollars, a direct decrease over the previous year. 8.856 billion U.S. dollars. Therefore, the fluctuation of the international market is a huge challenge for the garment industry in Guangdong.

Foreign trade processing has always been an important part of the garment industry in Guangdong. Since China joined the WTO in the past decade, what has changed in Guangdong's clothing foreign trade processing?

Liu Yueping: In the ten years since China joined the WTO, Guangdong Province has undergone some important changes in the processing and export of clothing. For example, prior to joining the WTO, the garment export of Guangdong was mainly a simple processing and low-end sample-processing OEM OEM processing mode, which was almost entirely independent of the design content. However, following the entry into the WTO, deeply involved in international competition, some of the most powerful clothing export companies have begun to set up their own design R&D teams, carried out ODM cooperation models, and improved their products’ core competitiveness in terms of design content and other aspects. Added value.

In view of the changes in the economic situation at home and abroad, what kind of plans for Guangdong's garment exports will follow?

Liu Yueping: With the frequent occurrence of trade frictions, we have begun to consider how to promote trade balance in Guangdong garment exports. For example, our cooperation model with South Korea is to introduce Korean fabrics to hold Korean fabric exhibitions in Guangzhou, to help Korean brands enter the Guangdong market through the international fashion platform, and at the same time establish a good relationship with the Seoul Dongdaemun Tourism Special Zone Convention in Seoul. Guangdong's garments enter the Korean market through the Dongdaemun clothing business district. At present, the proportion of Korea's and Guangdong's clothing imports and exports is roughly the same as the number of South Korean garments sold in Guangdong, and there will be three pieces of Guangdong garments sold in South Korea. Now, we are also exploring how to cooperate with American designers to improve trade balance and enhance the competitiveness of Guangdong apparel products market.

In your opinion, what are the advantages of the textile and apparel industry in Guangdong?

Liu Yueping: In the whole country, the advantages of Guangdong's textile and garment industry are mainly reflected in three aspects. First, geo-advantage, thanks to the reform and opening up, the earliest three to one make-up processing laid a solid industrial technology, talent base and experience for Guangdong clothing; at the same time, with the advantage of adjoining Hong Kong, Guangdong apparel products in the design style Follow the trend and become the source of domestic apparel trends. The second is the advantage of the industrial chain. The complete industrial chain support is the precondition for the Guangdong garment industry to vigorously promote industrial transfer in the province. Moreover, in the case of rising costs of materials, labor, etc., it is still able to retain the headquarters of garment companies and maintain the healthy development of the garment industry. The industrial chain is the core competitiveness. The third is the advantage of talents. The soul of apparel products lies in the design. More than a quarter of domestic outstanding fashion designers gather in Guangdong, of which 61.5% of Jinding Award designers serve Guangdong apparel companies, while there are more than 30 textbooks in Guangdong. Specialized colleges and universities deliver more than 8,000 professionals each year for the apparel industry.

What is the direction of future garment industry restructuring and industrial upgrading in Guangdong Province?

Liu Yueping: In the past two years, especially after the global financial crisis, the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Government have proposed actively expanding domestic demand, highlighting “three promotion and one maintenance”, that is, promoting the improvement of independent innovation capabilities, promoting the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, and promoting the building of modern industries. The system maintains stable and rapid economic development. As one of the advantageous traditional industries, the garment industry in Guangdong is facing a serious problem of how to upgrade and transform itself into the modern garment industry through independent innovation. In this crucial period of transformation and upgrading, we must follow the laws of economic development, grasp the opportunities for the development of industries with traditional advantages, take advantage of modern service industries, increase the application of information technology, e-commerce, automation technology, and development software in the apparel industry, and develop high- The value-added, high-growth modern urban apparel industry has intensified its industrial competitiveness and sustainable development. It is an efficient engine for the transformation, development and optimization of the garment industry in Guangdong Province.
