**1. Preparation is Key**
Let's face it—when dealing with kids, preparation is everything. Their patience and ability to stay still are limited, so make sure you've got all the boring details sorted out before involving them. Is your memory card ready? Are the clothes ironed and laid out? Have any props been set aside nearby? (Props are a big hit with kids—they can play with almost anything!) Only after you've handled all the logistical aspects should you involve the child, as nothing looks worse than a kid who was enjoying themselves just moments ago but now feels bored or restless.
**2. Forget About Asking Them to "Smile"**
Sometimes those forced smiles are adorable! There's definitely room for asking your child to smile if you're looking to capture their cheesy, playful side—it's both sweet and funny. However, the best way to elicit a genuine smile is to do or say something genuinely amusing, like pulling a funny face, spinning a little story, or telling a joke. This isn't a movie scene where you need a million-dollar grin; kids have such expressive faces that even a subtle expression can look amazing. If all else fails, most kids love imitating others, especially if you act a bit silly—you'll likely get a laugh out of it!
