Li Guanqi, a humble Chinese farmer, carved out an extraordinary legacy in the field of man-made fibers through his intelligence, perseverance, and unwavering dedication. Born in 1946 in Hua County, Henan Province, he quickly rose to become a production captain after finishing high school. In 1975, driven by curiosity and a strong desire to learn, Li began exploring new technologies and eventually made breakthroughs in flour machinery, oil extraction equipment, and rapeseed virus technology. His innovations earned him a silver award at the Fourth National Invention Exhibition, marking the beginning of his journey toward success.
In 1991, while searching for new business opportunities, Li came across an article in a foreign journal titled *Chemical Manuscript*, which mentioned that soy protein from soybean meal could be spun into fiber. This discovery sparked a revolutionary idea in Li’s mind. At the time, China was experiencing a surge in interest in "Silkworm Cocoon" technology, and Li, with his sharp insight and determination, believed there was a huge market for soybean-based fiber. Without hesitation, he dedicated himself to this new cause.
After ten years of relentless research and over 800 trials, Li successfully extracted soybean protein fiber from pressed soybean meal — the eighth major synthetic fiber in the world. His invention marked the first original Chinese technology in the history of man-made fibers globally, making China the only country capable of industrial-scale production of soybean fiber. As a major consumer of chemical fibers, China had long relied on expensive imports. Li's achievement changed that, earning him the title of "Father of Soybean Fiber."
In 2005, he founded the Henan Soybean Functional Fiber Engineering Research Center, bringing together experts from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and textile professionals to study the entire production process of soybean fiber, including spinning, weaving, dyeing, and garment-making. Together, they developed functional undergarments with UV protection and anti-radiation properties.
As more people became familiar with Li Guanqi and his soybean fiber, his contributions gained widespread recognition. He brought China onto the global stage with its own independent intellectual property in fiber technology and ended the long-standing absence of a Chinese name in the world of man-made fibers.
In 2009, responding to consumer demand, Li launched the "Yuan Xiu" brand, introducing soybean fetal and infant fiber clothing. These products offered unprecedented comfort and health benefits, revolutionizing the apparel industry and earning praise from pediatric experts as "the baby’s favorite." The products attracted attention from major media outlets like Phoenix TV and CCTV, as well as the care and support of senior leaders. They also won the affection of international friends.
By the time of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, soybean fiber clothing was officially designated as a "diplomatic gift" by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, symbolizing the "creation in China" movement.
