Editor's note: In 2009, the fabric industry made significant progress in resource integration, and the overall development of the textile sector was impressive. The rapid growth of the fabric industry has drawn attention from within the sector. As downstream players in the supply chain, garment manufacturers should also move away from biases toward imported fabrics. By collaborating with domestic fabric companies, it is essential to identify the best entry points and synergies to leverage local materials, reduce costs, enhance product quality, and achieve mutual benefits.
In September 2009, during the China International Fabrics Design Competition, jointly organized by the China Textile Information Center, National Textile Product Development Center, and China Fashion Color Association, over 2,000 entries were evaluated by a panel of domestic and international textile experts. The competition showcased new trends and innovations in block fabrics, which received high praise. Notably, the originality and strength of Chinese fabrics were surprising. Judges highlighted that many Chinese fabric enterprises have moved beyond the "copying" phase, finding their unique positions in the market. They have made remarkable progress in color selection and material application, with some techniques being more scientific and detail-oriented. This reflects a growing strength in China’s textile industry, with several companies reaching or approaching global standards.
In recent years, fabric enterprises have shifted focus from mere production and cost-cutting to product innovation. With improved R&D capabilities, a wide range of high-quality domestic fabrics have emerged, raising quality standards significantly. According to statistics from the 2009 China International Fabric Exhibition, 60% of participating Chinese companies had the ability to do ODM, while traditional OEM firms accounted for only 30%. This shift indicates a stronger capacity among Chinese companies to meet buyer demands.
An Italian designer once remarked that when he visited China over a decade ago, he found little design in domestic apparel and fabrics. However, in recent years, the development of Chinese fabrics has been remarkable. Compared to expensive foreign alternatives, Chinese fabrics are gaining popularity due to their high quality and reasonable pricing. Many foreign companies are now using domestic fabrics, even though they still have a long way to go to match the excellence of Italian textiles. Nonetheless, Italian textile and clothing companies are increasingly recognizing the potential of Chinese fabric producers, acknowledging that China’s progress cannot be ignored.
Innovative projects like Shandong Textiles Co., Ltd.'s 1.9tex ultra-high density cotton fabric research demonstrate China's technological advancement. The company successfully developed ultra-pure cotton yarn and advanced finishing techniques, solving issues like fabric loss and non-iron performance. At the Top Fabrics World Exposition in February 2009, Shandong Ruyi became the first Chinese textile company to qualify for the PV Show, proving its capability to lead in global fabric trends. Their 300-count woolen fabric reached world-class technical levels, earning recognition and awards.
Kunshan Xu Rong Textile Co., Ltd. introduced innovative fiber fabrics at the 2009 China International Fabric Exhibition. Their Cool Yarn series provided an instant cooling effect, while ELEX fabrics offered long-lasting antibacterial properties and anti-static features. Dri-release fabrics had superior moisture-wicking abilities compared to cotton. Hubei Maiya's "Xiantao You Cashmere" fabric combined the look of cashmere with a wool texture, extending the life of suits and showcasing customer-centric innovation.
Fujian Guan Hong Co., Ltd., a leader in functional fabric development, holds over 14 patents and focuses on PTT elastic fibers. Their products not only provide functional benefits but also support brand marketing through thematic designs. These fabrics cover health, environmental protection, warmth, and are expanding into smart and fashion-related areas.
Despite the financial crisis, some Chinese fabric companies have thrived by focusing on innovation and technology. Jiangyin Foster Textile Co., Ltd. launched a high-end fabric line, attracting top brands like Armani and Zegna. With over 30% average profit margins, the company has adapted well to market changes. Chengde Large Wool Textile Co., Ltd. exemplifies innovation by integrating fabric development with yarn and apparel segments, enhancing the entire industrial chain.
Large Textile Co., Ltd. invests heavily in R&D, working closely with apparel brands to anticipate trends and create marketable products. Their innovative approach has led to 47% of sales coming from new products. Efficient production and fast delivery mechanisms allow them to adapt to small-batch orders, strengthening their market position.
The current state of the textile industry shows that companies with strong innovation, timely product adjustments, and market responsiveness will thrive. Technological advancement and customer-centric strategies are key to success in this competitive landscape.
