The current cotton price has risen due to a drop in domestic cotton output and increased demand from textile companies. However, despite the higher prices, cotton farmers are not reaping significant benefits. This situation highlights the urgent need for national policy support to sustain cotton production.
At present, the price of cotton is around 7 yuan per kilogram, but this hasn’t stabilized farming activities. In Shandong, one of China’s major cotton-producing provinces, the area dedicated to cotton cultivation has been steadily shrinking. For instance, Dezhou City, which once contributed about 10% of the nation’s cotton, now only has approximately 15.5 million mu under cotton—down by 32% compared to last year. The main reason behind this decline is that cotton doesn’t provide as good returns as grain crops, which discourages farmers from continuing to grow it.
Farmer Wang Xiaoyun shared her experience with a reporter: “At the current price, growing cotton yields less than 130 yuan per mu in a year. Not only is the income lower than that of grain, but it also takes more time and effort. It uses up a lot of time that could have been spent working elsewhere.†This sentiment reflects the broader challenges faced by cotton growers.
Ma Junkai, deputy secretary-general of the Dezhou Cotton Association, pointed out that fluctuating cotton prices have led to unstable incomes for farmers. He explained, “If the purchase price of seed cotton falls below 7.5 yuan per kilogram this year, it won’t be profitable for farmers to grow cotton, and the planting area will likely shrink next year.†To address this issue, he recommended that the government introduce supportive policies to encourage cotton farming and maintain stable planting areas.
Currently, the only subsidy available for cotton is 15 yuan per mu, which is significantly lower than the subsidies for grain crops. Ma emphasized the need for increased financial support for cotton farmers. “In the long term, we must expand the scale of cotton planting,†he said. “One household can’t afford large-scale mechanization, so farmers remain stuck in labor-intensive work, which reduces their overall income.â€
With these challenges, it's clear that without proper support and incentives, the future of cotton farming in China remains uncertain.
